Wine Arbitrage - Spot Check
You might need to be quick here. These wines have popped up significantly below the next cheapest available.
It’s been a pretty turbulent week for the global economy. We heard some poor employment data surface from the US, no rate cuts from the Fed, rising interest rates in Japan triggering volatility across all markets and some major fluctuations in crypto.
During the same time, I’ve been keeping a close eye on the wine market, trying to capture bargains from any distressed sellers.
Things kicked off on Thursday, with a case of Conterno Barolo Francia. Check out my confirmation of purchase from Bordeaux Index below.
Not only is this £600 below the next cheapest on the market, but there was a live bid on Cru World Wine which could have resulted in an instant gain of £104.50 post commission. Alas, BI emailed Monday stating this ‘was listed at the incorrect price’ and that the seller wanted to cancel the trade. Should this be allowed on a live exchange? Not sure personally. In my view, it should be tough luck for the seller - you mess with the bull, you should get the horns!
But enough of my whining! Here are some gems I’ve found for you. All available at the time of writing.
#1. NV Jerome Prevost, Closerie Fac Simile Rose disg. 2014 1x75cl
I’ve been fascinated with the wines of Prevost since reading Bursting Bubbles. This bottle has just popped up at Chelsea Vintners at a £74 discount to the next lowest on the market. That’s 21%. Go Go Go!
#2 2018 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots, Méo-Camuzet
Méo-Camuzet is among the most sought after producers in Burgundy, laying claim to some of the finest Premier Cru vineyards of Nuits-St-Georges and Vosne-Romanée. Definitely falls into the investment category and with the arbitrage potential, you’d have to agree it’s a good punt. Listed at £97 per bottle, the next cheapest on the market is at £167 per bottle as part of a case. That’s 72% more expensive, even more in real terms as you’d have to buy 6.
#3 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, XXL, Domaine de la Janasse, Rhône
Not my style of wine but can’t argue with the numbers here. This is a 100 point wine on robertparker.com, available at a 33% discount to the next lowest on the market. If that’s not enough for you, there’s a live bid on Cru World Wine for £109 more per case.
Three pretty serious deals here that I’m sure will not be around for long. There were over 50 opportunities returned by our system this morning. It’s unclear whether the macro environment has triggered these sales. I’m going to leave it there for now as I want readers to realise some of these offers. Stay tuned to this channel as there is so much more to come.
